Dragon Quest XII reste en développement, le créateur Yuji Horii assurant aux fans que les informations seront dévoilées progressivement. Lors d'un récent livestream avec son groupe d'émissions de radio, Kosokoso Hōsō Kyoku, Horii a confirmé que l'équipe Square Enix travaille avec diligence sur le projet.

Cette mise à jour fait suite à une annonce de mai 2024 reconnaissant le décès de la créatrice de personnages de Dragon Quest Akira Toriyama et du compositeur Koichi Sugiyama, et du départ du producteur principal Yu Miyake pour diriger la division du jeu mobile de Square Enix. Les préoccupations concernant le statut du jeu sont survenues au milieu de ces changements et du manque ultérieur de mises à jour; Cependant, les commentaires d'Horii réduisent efficacement ces craintes.
