Lizzy Caplan has revealed intriguing details about Channing Tatum's shelved Gambit film, describing it as having a "1930s screwball romantic comedy" tone set within the superhero genre.
In an interview with Business Insider, the Cloverfield star discussed her planned co-starring role alongside Tatum in the Gambit project, praising its "exceptionally creative premise."
Tatum's much-publicized campaign to portray the popular X-Men character appeared permanently derailed until his unexpected Gambit cameo in Marvel's blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine. His previous attempts to develop a standalone Gambit film were abandoned following Disney's acquisition of Fox in 2019. The actor has openly discussed his emotional investment in the role, including feeling "traumatized" when the project collapsed.
Deadpool & Wolverine: Hidden Details and Surprise Appearances
Reports first emerged in 2017 about Caplan's casting as the female lead. During her recent interview, she confirmed her formal attachment to the project, including pre-production meetings with Tatum. "We progressed quite far in development," Caplan recalled. "We had reached the stage where shooting dates were being scheduled."
Back in 2018, producer Simon Kinberg explained to IGN why they envisioned Gambit working within romantic comedy parameters: "Gambit's character - as a charismatic hustler with undeniable charm - naturally lent itself to this genre approach."
Caplan's recent comments corroborate Kinberg's earlier statements: "The creative team wanted to craft something resembling classic 1930s screwball comedies, just set within the X-Men universe. It would've been incredibly entertaining."
While Marvel Studios has confirmed the X-Men's eventual MCU integration, Tatum's future as Gambit remains uncertain. However, Reynolds accidentally fueled speculation last August by sharing an HD version of a particularly blink-and-you'll-miss-it Deadpool & Wolverine moment that sent the mutant fandom into frenzied discussion.
