Kojima announces Death Stranding anime

Death Stranding appears to be expanding beyond live-action into anime territory. Ahead of June's Death Stranding 2: On The Beach release, director Hideo Kojima has seemingly confirmed an anime adaptation is in development.

In an interview with Vogue Japan (via VGC), Kojima discussed his ongoing collaboration with A24 on the live-action Death Stranding film, closing with a tantalizing note about an anime version. Here's the translated quote:

"I'm currently working with A24 on the live-action 'DEATH STRANDING' film adaptation. Regarding video game films, we've seen recent adaptations like 'The Last of Us' that faithfully follow the original story, while others like 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' prioritize fan service. Both approaches have merit, but as a cinephile, I want to explore cinematic expression. My goal is to create a 'DEATH STRANDING' film that stands as unique cinematic art, worthy of recognition at prestigious festivals like Cannes and Venice. Interestingly, we're also developing an anime adaptation."

While no production studio was specified, this clearly indicates another Death Stranding adaptation is underway in anime form.

A24 officially announced its partnership with Kojima Productions back in 2023 for the live-action adaptation. Kojima emphasized this wouldn't be a direct game translation, stating: "Our target audience extends beyond gamers to all cinema lovers. We're crafting an unprecedented Death Stranding universe that can only exist through film."

Earlier this year, reports confirmed A Quiet Place: Day One director Michael Sarnoski joined the project as writer and director. Death Stranding lead Norman Reedus expressed interest in reprising his role, commenting: "Of course I'd play Sam again if given the opportunity."

This anime adaptation opens exciting possibilities for exploring the Death Stranding universe. The creative approach could vary dramatically depending on which studio handles production - imagine a Studio Trigger interpretation, for instance.
