Fans eager to explore the Star Wars universe beyond The Rise of Skywalker are getting their first glimpse - though not from Shawn Levy's upcoming project just yet. While anticipation remains high for the Deadpool and Wolverine director's Star Wars: Starfighter, readers will first journey into the post-TROS era through the new YA novel Star Wars: The Last Order.
Finn and Jannah's Untold Story Continues
The recently revealed novel, appearing on Penguin Random House's website, will shine new light on fan-favorite characters Finn (John Boyega) and resistance fighter Jannah (Naomi Ackie) from The Rise of Skywalker. Author Kwame Mbalia crafts a story where, according to the publisher's synopsis:
"In the aftermath of Episode IX, Resistance heroes Finn and Jannah embark on a mission to track down a rogue First Order officer kidnapping children. As former stormtroopers, their hunt forces them to confront painful memories from their time serving the tyrannical regime."
This novel marks the franchise's first official expansion beyond TROS - beating other planned projects to the punch. Levy's highly-anticipated post-TROS film remains in development, with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently telling Deadline the film will operate in a fresh timeline window: "Shawn's standalone story takes place five or six years after Episode IX."
The project's writer Jonathan Tropper recently told Screen Rant he's optimistic about production timelines: "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think." Days later at Star Wars Celebration Japan, Ryan Gosling was confirmed as the lead with a May 28, 2027 release date announced.
