Phỏm (also known as Tá lả or Tứ lơ khơ) is a popular Vietnamese card game, especially in the north. The game involves collecting and discarding cards to form sets ("Phom") while minimizing the points of remaining unmatched cards. Using a standard 52-card deck and diverse gameplay, Phỏm offers engaging strategic challenges. It's a favorite pastime for family and friends during gatherings and holidays.

Key Terms:

• Phom: Sets of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, or three or more cards of the same rank.
• Junk cards: Cards not part of a Phom.
• Ù (Ù): A player with three complete Phoms (no junk cards) wins instantly.
• Stomach (Cơ): The remaining undealt cards.
• Móm: A player who cannot make any Phoms at the end of the game.
• Take the pin (Ăn cọc): Taking an opponent's discarded card in the final round.
• Send (Chốt): Discarding a card that completes an opponent's Phom in the final round.
• Compensation (Bù): A player who takes an opponent's discarded card must compensate the next player who achieves Ù. Three consecutive cards also trigger compensation.
• Re (Rê): A player's discarded card allows another player an extra turn.

Gameplay:

• Players: 2-4 players. The dealer (or winner of the previous round) gets 10 cards; others receive 9. Remaining cards form the "Stomach."
• Turns: Play proceeds counter-clockwise, starting with the player holding 10 cards.
• Card Play: Players discard cards. If a card can complete a Phom, another player can "take" it. Otherwise, a card is drawn from the Stomach.
• Game End: The game ends when a player achieves Ù, or after four rounds if no one achieves Ù.
• Final Round: Players must form all possible Phoms, "send" cards where possible, and then discard their final card. Points are calculated from remaining junk cards.

Scoring (when no player achieves Ù):

• The lowest score wins.
• A, J, Q, K count as 1, 11, 12, 13 respectively. Other cards have face value.
• Ties are broken by who discarded their cards first.
• Final Score Calculation:
  • 1st place: +6 points
  • 2nd place: -1 point
  • 3rd place: -2 points
  • 4th place: -3 points
  • Player who takes the pin (Ăn cọc): +4 points
  • Player who had their pin taken: -4 points
  • Player who achieves Ù: +15 points (other players lose 5 points each)
  • Player who is "burned/burnt" (Móm): Loses 4 points to the winner.
