A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles now available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While the Switch Online app boasts a strong GBA library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. We've compiled ten favorites—four GBA and six DS—with no particular ranking.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA version is a solid alternative. A worthwhile play, especially for comparison, offering a more streamlined experience. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, often appealing even to non-shooter fans.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
While the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA as a worthy successor. This side-scrolling action title, the first in an excellent series, may have some initial rough edges, but these are polished in later installments. Start here and enjoy the ride!
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry, justified by its distinct gameplay. Unlike Mega Man Zero, this is an RPG with a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The virtual world concept is cleverly executed, offering a robust experience. While later entries see diminishing returns, this remains highly entertaining.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection is worth playing in its entirety, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on occasion. The soul-collecting system encourages grinding, but the addictive gameplay makes it worthwhile. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal—a top-tier third-party GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae was a cult classic, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare broadened its appeal, establishing Shantae's popularity across generations. Its origins are somewhat ambiguous, stemming from an unreleased GBA title, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title (its origin), Ace Attorney blends investigations and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptional, though later installments are also strong contenders.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick offers compelling writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of your death. A captivating experience that deserves more recognition.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a suitable alternative for those without access to a DS. A truly exceptional game.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are excellent, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the replacement of touch controls with buttons. Play them all!
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A franchise challenging to replicate outside the DS/3DS environment. Atlus's Switch port is a commendable effort, offering a playable experience. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding.
