Gearbox Denies Launch Date Change is Influenced by Other Games

Prior to the State of Play broadcast, Gearbox Software announced that Borderlands 4’s release date has been moved up by two weeks from its original schedule. The studio attributed this shift to "incredible development work." However, fans have speculated about other motivations, with many pointing to potential release plans for Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6).

Both Gearbox Software and Rockstar Games are owned by Take-Two Interactive, leading to theories that the scheduling change was influenced at a corporate level. This aligns with Take-Two’s previous statements regarding their game release windows.

CEO Strauss Zelnick clarified that this would not conflict with Borderlands 4’s planned launch within their fiscal year 2026 (April 1, 2025 – March 31, 2026). In a November 2024 Variety interview, he noted, "I think it’s safe to say that we wouldn’t, and no one would, stack up huge releases unnecessarily."

On April 30, Gearbox Entertainment CEO Randy Pitchford addressed these rumors via several posts on Twitter (X), explaining that the early release reflects the studio's confidence in their product. He emphasized, "Our decision is literally 0% about any other product’s actual or theoretical launch date," according to Pitchford.

Regardless of the reasoning behind the schedule change, fans will enjoy an all-new Borderlands experience arriving sooner than anticipated. Borderlands 4 launches on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. For the latest updates on the game, refer to our article below!
