Hulu may be bringing Buffy the Vampire Slayer back from the dead. Variety reports a reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially reprising her iconic role as Buffy, albeit as a recurring character. The series will focus on a new Slayer.
Adding star power, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is reportedly in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
Whedon's absence follows previous accusations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center on a new Slayer with the possibility of Gellar's return.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces. Her allies included Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The series' legacy continued through a series of comic books and the spin-off Angel.
