Helldivers 2 Vow Revenge for Mars Attack

An invasion has reached Super Earth in Helldivers 2's latest update, bringing the warfront uncomfortably close to home. Amid the turmoil, Helldivers received grim news that the Illuminate have obliterated the neighboring planet of Mars, and players are already rallying for retaliation.

In-universe reports confirmed the details, announcing that Mars has been completely destroyed by the Illuminate. The Helldiver Training Sites on Mars were lost in the devastation, and the facility operators running the exercises perished while defending the planet.

Opening the Galaxy Map in Helldivers 2 now reveals Mars as a shattered, but still visible, mass of rock.

Until a recent update, Mars served as the training ground for Helldivers preparing to spread democracy across the galaxy. The sudden relocation of tutorial zones raised concerns a week ago, but the motive is now clear: as part of their invasion, the Illuminate have targeted a place that held sentimental value for all Helldivers 2 players.

The official Helldivers 2 account shared promotional art on X/Twitter, calling on players to "Avenge Mars."

The effort to rally the emotions of Helldivers 2 players appears to have paid off. Players have already embraced the narrative; one shared a GIF from Starship Troopers showing Rico’s resolve after his home is destroyed, while another posted the widely recognized closed fist meme. Helldivers 2 players consistently engage with the game’s evolving storylines.

Yet, alongside the in-character posts, some are having fun with the situation. "Hey, the only people allowed to kill Helldivers on Mars are Super Earth Drill Instructors!" one user joked. References to DOOM and other media have also emerged.

The Illuminate invasion of Super Earth is fully underway in Helldivers 2's Heart of Democracy update, released today. Players can now deploy to the planet to defend it against the alien squids, and despite support from new SEAF forces, the battle remains chaotic.
