Capcom Enhances iOS Versions of 'Resident Evil 4', 'Village', and '7' with Online DRM

TouchArcade Rating:

The latest updates for Capcom's premium-priced mobile ports, including *Resident Evil 7 biohazard*, *Resident Evil 4* Remake, and *Resident Evil Village* on iOS and iPadOS, have introduced a significant change. These updates, rolled out just an hour ago, integrate an online DRM system that checks your purchase history each time you launch the games. This new system requires an internet connection to verify ownership of the game or any DLC before allowing access to the title screen. If you opt out of this check by clicking 'no', the game will promptly close. While this process only takes a few seconds with an internet connection, it's a stark departure from the previous experience, as these games can no longer be launched and played offline.

Before these updates, I confirmed that all three games worked seamlessly offline. Now, with the new update, an alert pops up, and choosing to not comply results in the immediate closure of the game. This shift towards mandatory online checks is disappointing, particularly for games that were previously enjoyable without an internet connection. The inclusion of such online DRM in games that players have already purchased can be frustrating and detracts from the overall experience.

It's my hope that Capcom will reconsider this approach and explore alternative methods for verifying purchases, perhaps implementing checks less frequently or finding a solution that doesn't compromise offline play. The addition of online DRM makes it more challenging to recommend these premium-priced ports wholeheartedly.
