Chocolate Cake Teaser Hints at 'Hollow Knight: Silksong' on Switch 2

Six years after Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece Hollow Knight, the game's release remains shrouded in mystery. Despite appearances at various events and a seemingly confirmed pre-June 2023 release (by Microsoft), Silksong skipped The Game Awards. However, the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct announcement has ignited a frenzy of speculation amongst fans.

The catalyst? A chocolate cake.

Sharp-eyed Hollow Knight subreddit users noticed that on January 15th, Team Cherry co-director William Pellen changed his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake image. He accompanied this with the cryptic tweet: "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow."

With rumors of a January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal circulating, fans connected the dots. The Switch 2 was indeed announced that day, but Pellen's tweet and its timing fueled intense speculation.

The mystery deepened when fans reverse-image-searched the cake, tracing it back to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on Bon Appétit, published on April 2nd, 2024. The significance? Nintendo confirmed a Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 for Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. This led fans to believe Pellen initiated an alternate reality game (ARG) with the cake image and tweet.

The speculation continued with analysis of Pellen's new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr (a 15-character handle, the same length as the phrase itself, possibly hinting at a Silksong NPC), and his new name, "little bomey," potentially referencing a South Australian wine, aligning with Team Cherry's location.

Initially, Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. However, six years later, the question remains: Is Silksong a Switch 2 launch title? A timed exclusive? Or is this all a case of overzealous fans grasping at straws?

We'll have answers in a few months. Until then, the mystery of the chocolate cake and its connection to Hollow Knight: Silksong's release continues to captivate the gaming community.
