Dynasty Warriors: Origins Battle of Hulao Gate Guide

The Battle of Hulao Gate marks the climactic end of Chapter 2 in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. Your mission is to defeat the formidable Dong Zhuo, but reaching him is no easy feat and will likely be the longest mission you've faced so far.

As the mission kicks off, navigate to the four enemy bases located in the bottom right of the map. After conquering two of them, a dramatic cutscene will trigger, showcasing a mounted cavalry charging down from a hill towards your position. Stay focused on your strategy; you'll naturally encounter and defeat this cavalry as you progress through the bases. If you manage to take down their commander, Zhang Liao, you'll be rewarded with the powerful twin pike weapon, enhancing your arsenal.

Once you've secured all the bases, you're ready to launch an assault on Hulao Gate itself. This leads to your first major confrontation with Dong Zhuo's forces. The battle can be chaotic, but your priority should be to protect Cao Cao until he executes his Grand Tactic. Once activated, many of the enemy defenses will crumble, allowing you to advance further towards Hulao Gate.

Lu Bu Appears

At this critical juncture, Dong Zhuo will deploy the fearsome Lu Bu to the frontline. Under no circumstances should you engage Lu Bu directly; a one-on-one fight with him is almost certain to end in your defeat. Instead, focus on eliminating enemy officers around the edges of the battlefield to maintain your morale, which Lu Bu's presence will severely drain.

Lu Bu will eventually move towards your main base to take on Yuan Shao. Although it might be tempting to intercept him, remember a key strategy in Dynasty Warriors games: never pursue Lu Bu. Liu Bei and his forces will attempt to hold him off, buying you precious time to focus on defeating Dong Zhuo. This situation sets a timer for the mission's completion. Liu Bei's forces can't hold Lu Bu indefinitely, so when you're notified of their retreat, ensure you're close to defeating Dong Zhuo. Otherwise, Lu Bu will crush Yuan Shao, ending the mission prematurely.

Go After Dong Zhuo

With Lu Bu distracted, take the opportunity to replenish your supplies, such as meat buns, at any of your conquered bases. Then, return to the gate. While Cao Cao prepares for a charge, you should first secure the bases to the north and west. Once you have all three squads ready and are fully healed, enter the closest commander's circle and charge into battle.

You'll face an overwhelming army, with Dong Zhuo unleashing his Grand Tactic of hurling fireballs at you. To stop this, you must destroy the front two catapults. If possible, activate Musou Rage and rush through the wall of soldiers blocking the catapults. Clear the path by defeating the soldiers and officers around them, allowing your forces to demolish the catapults and end Dong Zhuo's Grand Tactic.

As you advance, Dong Zhuo will initiate another fireball-throwing Grand Tactic. This time, you need to defeat one of his officers to stop it. Head up the stairs on the right to confront the officer, but be prepared for an ambush by Diaochan, who has defected to Dong Zhuo's side. If you can, challenge her to a duel. While her quick combos can be challenging, defeating her will prevent you from being overwhelmed by fighting both her and the officer simultaneously.

Once the second Grand Tactic is thwarted, the path to Dong Zhuo should be clear. Your forces, bolstered by high morale, should be able to handle his remaining troops without your direct intervention. Additionally, if Dian Wei initiates a Grand Tactic, it will further ease your path to victory. Resist the urge to duel Dong Zhuo; at this stage, defeating him and his weakened forces should be straightforward.

And that's how you complete the Battle of Hulao Gate in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! The game is now available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
