Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: Complete Guide & Walkthrough
Quick Links
Dark/Dragon-type Hydreigon is a powerhouse in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, making it a must-have for any serious trainer's Pokedex. To harness its strength, you'll first need to catch its pre-evolutions, Deino and Zweilous. These can be found exclusively in Pokemon Scarlet, requiring alternative methods to obtain them in Pokemon Violet.
Updated January 13, 2025 by Renri Seong: The Dark/Dragon-type Deino evolves into the formidable pseudo-legendary Hydreigon. First introduced in Gen 5 in Pokemon Black/White, the Deino line has been a staple in mainline games, including Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. As with new generations, Deino and its evolutions are version-exclusive, available in the wild in Pokemon Scarlet but requiring trade for Pokemon Violet. With a range of pseudo-legendaries to choose from in Scarlet & Violet, you might wonder if Hydreigon still holds its ground. This updated guide provides fresh insights into Hydreigon's stats and type effectiveness.
Where to Catch Deino in Pokemon Scarlet
Deino and Zweilous Locations
In Pokemon Scarlet, Deino can be found in several key locations including Alfornada Cavern, Dalizapa Passage, Glaseado Mountain, Area Zero, and North Province (Area Two). Glaseado Mountain, Area Zero, and North Province (Area Two) are straightforward to locate, while Alfornada Cavern and Dalizapa Passage require a bit more exploration. Deino in Dalizapa Passage and Alfornada Cavern are typically between levels 35-40.
- Alfornada Cavern: Located in the southwest corner of the Paldea map, you'll need Koraidon's high jump ability to navigate the cave effectively.
- Dalizapa Passage: Accessible by traveling east from Medali or west from Zapapico. It's the area between these two locations on the map.
Additionally, Deino can be encountered in 3-star Tera Raids, which become available after securing three gym badges. These raid Deinos may have different Tera Types and a chance to possess their Hidden Ability.
Zweilous, the evolved form of Deino, can also be found in the wild at Dalizapa Passage, Area Zero, and Alfornada Cavern. Like Deino, Zweilous can appear in Tera Raids, specifically in 4-star Tera Raids.
Hydreigon can be obtained from 5/6-star Tera Raids.
How to Get Deino in Pokemon Violet
How to Trade and Transfer
Since the Deino line is exclusive to Pokemon Scarlet, acquiring one in Pokemon Violet involves trading or transferring. For trading, you'll need a Nintendo Switch Online Membership to access the Union Circle. Alternatively, if you prefer not to subscribe, consider using Pokemon HOME to transfer Deino from another game to Pokemon Violet.
To transfer using HOME, you'll need the HOME app on your Switch. Deino and its evolutions can be transferred from Pokemon Sword/Shield, Pokemon GO, or Pokemon Scarlet.
- Open Pokemon HOME, select the game with Deino, and move it to your Basic Box. Save and exit.
- In HOME, open Pokemon Violet and transfer Deino from the Basic Box to a PC Box. Save and exit.
How to Evolve Deino into Zweilous and Hydreigon
What Level Does Deino Evolve?
Deino evolves into Zweilous at level 50, and Zweilous evolves into Hydreigon at level 64. To expedite this process, have Deino or Zweilous engage in auto-battles against large groups of Pokemon to gain experience quickly. Alternatively, you can use Exp. Candies or Rare Candies. Exp. Candy L and Exp. Candy XL are especially useful due to Deino's high evolution thresholds.
Is Hydreigon a Good Pokemon?
Hydreigon Stats & Weaknesses
As a pseudo-legendary, Hydreigon stands out as one of the most powerful Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. Its base stat total reaches 600, boasting high Special Attack and Attack with a solid Speed stat. This makes Hydreigon suitable for both physical and special attack strategies, especially with a Timid (+Spd, -Attk) or Jolly (+Spd, -Sp.Attk) Nature.
| HP: | 92 | | Attack: | 105 | | Special Attack:| 125 | | Defense: | 90 | | Special Defense:| 90 | | Speed: | 98 | | Total: | 600 |
As a Dark/Dragon-type, Hydreigon's type effectiveness is as follows:
| Super-effective against: | Dragon, Ghost, Psychic | | Weaknesses: | Fairy (4x), Fighting, Bug, Dragon, Ice | | Resistances: | Grass, Water, Fire, Electric, Ghost, Dark | | Immunities: | Ground, Psychic |
Utilizing Terastallization, Hydreigon can mitigate its vulnerability to Fairy-type moves. Offensively, changing its Tera Type can enhance moves like Flash Cannon for STAB benefits. Given Hydreigon's versatile move pool, you can choose between physical and special attacks. However, its significant weakness to Fairy-types means incorporating a Steel-type move, such as Flash Cannon (the only Steel-type move it can learn via TM), is crucial. Other recommended moves include Nasty Plot to boost Special Attack, Dragon Pulse or Draco Meteor, and Dark Pulse, making Hydreigon a formidable force on your team.
