Deltarune Update: Chapter 4 Nears Completion, but Release Remains Distant
Toby Fox, creator of Undertale and Deltarune, recently shared a development update in his newsletter. While Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4 are still some time away from their simultaneous release on PC, Switch, and PS4 (as announced in his Halloween 2023 newsletter), significant progress has been made.
Chapter 4 is nearing completion. All maps are finished, battles are playable, and the chapter is considered "basically playable" by Fox, pending final polish. This polish includes minor cutscene improvements, battle balancing and visual enhancements, background additions, and refinements to ending sequences for a couple of battles. Positive feedback has been received from playtesters.
The delay, however, is attributed to the complexities of a multi-platform, multilingual release, especially given that this is the first major paid release since Undertale. Fox highlights several crucial tasks remaining: testing new features, finalizing PC and console versions, Japanese localization, and thorough bug testing.
Chapter 3 development is complete (as per Fox's February newsletter), and preliminary work on Chapter 5 (map creation, bullet pattern design) has already begun.
The newsletter offered a glimpse into upcoming content, including dialogue between Ralsei and Rouxls, a character description for Elnina, and a new item: GingerGuard. While the three-year wait since Chapter 2 has been frustrating for fans, the anticipation is high, fueled by Fox's confirmation that Chapters 3 and 4 combined will surpass the length of Chapters 1 and 2. Fox is optimistic that future chapter releases will be more streamlined once Chapters 3 and 4 launch. No firm release date has been announced.
