Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just announced an exciting lineup for the sci-fi shooter Destiny 2, dubbed the "Year of Prophecy." This year promises four significant content updates, including two new expansions and major seasonal and core game enhancements, available to both paying and free players.
The "Year of Prophecy" kicks off with the Rite of the Nine, a fresh take on dungeon diving that's now available to all players at no additional cost. This update brings new twists to familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep, along with opportunities to reconnect with Orin and acquire refreshed dungeon weapons.
Next on the horizon is the expansion Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, launching on July 15. This marks the beginning of a multiyear saga centered around the mysterious Nine, introducing new characters like Lodi and the Warlock Vanguard, Ikora. Set on the new destination Kepler, inspired by Destiny 2’s dungeons, players can look forward to puzzle-solving, pathfinding challenges, new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.
Alongside the expansion, major core game innovations will roll out, including revised armor and gear systems for enhanced buildcrafting and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. This update allows players to choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops. These options cater to both quick fireteam action and longer-form cooperative content, as well as short, self-contained sessions for solo players. Additionally, 50 new modifiers and curated activity rotations will offer deeper gameplay customization and new challenges.

The second major update, Ash & Iron, arrives on September 9, followed by the second expansion, Renegades, on December 2. The year concludes with the Shadow & Order update on March 3. Destiny 2: Renegades draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, blending Destiny’s unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements.
These updates come at a pivotal time for Bungie, following layoffs affecting 220 staff members in July 2024, less than a year after another round of 100 layoffs. Despite these challenges, Bungie remains committed to delivering high-quality content to its dedicated player base.
In addition to Destiny 2, Bungie is also working on the reboot of the classic franchise, Marathon. Revealed in May 2023, the first hands-on preview of Marathon was shared last month. IGN's preview praised its potential to satisfy the Bungie PvP itch, with a release planned for September on PC and consoles.
