Snow White, the latest live-action adaptation from Disney, directed by Marc Webb known for The Amazing Spider-Man series, had a challenging start at the box office. According to Comscore, the film opened with a domestic total of $43 million, marking one of the lowest openings for Disney's remakes. While it managed to top the charts for the week and secured the second biggest opening of 2025, it fell short of the $45 million debut of the live-action Dumbo from 2019 and did not meet expectations.
To put this into perspective, other Disney remakes like 2019's The Lion King, 2017's Beauty and the Beast, 2016's The Jungle Book, and 2023's The Little Mermaid all boasted opening weekend domestic earnings exceeding $100 million.
Internationally, Snow White also had a modest start, earning $44.3 million over the opening weekend, resulting in a global total of $87.3 million as per Comscore's estimates.
Snow White brings the beloved 1937 animated classic to life, featuring Rachel Zegler, a seasoned musical performer, in the titular role and Gal Gadot, known for her portrayal of Wonder Woman, as the Evil Queen. With a hefty production budget reportedly over $250 million, and factoring in marketing expenses, the film faces a steep challenge to reach break-even point based on its initial box office performance. However, there's a glimmer of hope for Snow White. Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to their Lion King remake, started with a domestic opening of just $35.4 million in December but went on to earn over $717 million globally. Disney is likely banking on a similar 'sleeper hit' success for Snow White, despite ongoing concerns about the performance of other recent releases like Captain America: Brave New World, which has grossed $400.8 million worldwide after six weekends ($192.1 million domestic and $208.7 million international).
IGN's review of Snow White scored it a 7/10, commending the film for "meaningfully adapting its original, rather than creating a lesser mimicry."
