Guillermo del Toro's passion for Frankenstein might rival that of Dr. Frankenstein himself. At the recent Next on Netflix preview event, the acclaimed writer-director shared a video message, teasing his much-anticipated adaptation of the classic tale. Although a trailer won't be available until this summer, Netflix unveiled a captivating first-look image featuring Oscar Isaac as the iconic mad scientist.
"This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for 50 years," del Toro revealed in the video, as reported by Variety. "I’ve been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein." As he spoke, he gestured towards the array of Frankenstein figures and collectibles adorning his famed Bleak House's Frankenstein room, underscoring his deep connection to the story.
Del Toro also offered a glimpse of some exclusive footage, showcasing Oscar Isaac's Victor Frankenstein in a confrontation with Mia Goth, who plays a seemingly affluent aristocrat. Additionally, viewers caught a brief look at Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein’s monster, characterized by long black hair, stitched-up gray skin, and a striking red glint in his eyes. Unfortunately, this footage is not currently available online.
"You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography," del Toro explained, emphasizing the deeply personal nature of the project. "It doesn’t get more personal than this."
