Live-Action Street Fighter Movie Finds a New Director

Legendary Entertainment's upcoming Street Fighter film adaptation has found its director: Kitao Sakurai, the creative force behind the comedic masterpiece, The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm this new big-screen take on the iconic fighting game franchise.

PlayCapcom's significant involvement is confirmed, and the film is already slated for release on March 20, 2026. This marks another attempt to translate the Street Fighter universe to the silver screen, following the infamous (and arguably cult-classic) 1994 adaptation starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.

While casting remains unannounced, fans can anticipate seeing familiar faces from the Street Fighter roster. The project initially had Danny and Michael Philippou (directors of Talk to Me) attached, but they left last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests a potential shift towards a more absurdist, possibly cartoonish, style – a direction that many fans, myself included, find appealing given Street Fighter's inherent over-the-top nature.

In the meantime, players can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced the popular character Mai Shiranui. Read our complete Street Fighter 6 review for a detailed breakdown.
