Following the excitement of announcing 26 new cast members for the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel and Robert Downey Jr. have hinted that more surprises are in store. During a recent livestream, Marvel unveiled an extensive list of actors joining Robert Downey Jr. in this superhero epic, marking the beginning of production.
One of the standout announcements was Channing Tatum reprising his role as the beloved X-Men character, Gambit. You can explore the complete Avengers: Doomsday cast list here.
However, fans quickly noticed some glaring omissions from the roster. Notable absences include Tom Holland's Spider-Man and Chris Evans, despite earlier reports suggesting his involvement in either Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars. Evans later refuted these claims. The list also lacked characters like Hulk, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, and Rhodey, as well as X-Men icons such as Deadpool, Wolverine, Storm, and Jean Grey.
The absence of these fan-favorites sparked disappointment among the Marvel community, but hope remains. Robert Downey Jr., set to portray Doctor Doom after his iconic run as Iron Man, hinted at more announcements via an Instagram post. "That’s what u call a deep bench of talent," he wrote. "Actually it’s more like a row, but an extra long one… That must be it.. right?"

Earlier this month, the Russo brothers described Avengers 5 and 6 as a "new beginning," setting the stage for Phase 7 of the MCU. Joe Russo emphasized their focus on villains, stating, "The only thing I’ll say about the movie is this: we love villains who think they’re the heroes of their own stories. That’s when they become three-dimensional and they become more interesting. When you have an actor like Robert Downey, you have to create a three-dimensional, well shaped character for the audience. That’s where a lot of our focus is going."
Avengers: Doomsday is slated for a theatrical release on May 1, 2026, with Secret Wars following on May 2027. Leading up to these, fans can look forward to Thunderbolts* in May 2025, the TV series Ironheart in June 2025, and the launch of Phase 6 with The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July 2025.
Additionally, Marvel Studios has added three untitled projects to its 2028 schedule, set for February 18, May 5, and November 10, with speculation pointing towards one being an X-Men film.
