Before you cast your line, make sure to accept the fishing quest from Simon the Fisherman (the white-haired NPC at one of the piers where the Baracuda is swimming). Simon requires you to catch 5 “fish,” and in return, he will reward you with a Tackle Box (we’ll explain the quotation marks shortly).
Here’s the catch: to start fishing, you’ll need a fishing rod and some bait/tackle, and conveniently, Simon the Fisherman is your go-to vendor for these essentials.

So, purchase a Wood Fishing Rod and some Worms from Simon. While most players suggest having at least 5 worms, we recommend buying 10 to be on the safe side. Before you ask, NO, you cannot equip the bait. The bait (Worm) simply needs to be in your inventory, and although you don’t equip it, it’s consumed when you catch a fish. Each fish you catch will automatically remove one Worm from your inventory.
Here’s the crucial detail: you won’t be able to catch any fish unless you have at least 5 bait items in your inventory. We tried fishing with just one Worm and caught nothing. It was only after we had 5 Worms that we started reeling in catches. We suggest placing the Worms in your hotbar to monitor your bait count easily. Once you’re equipped with these essentials, you’re ready for the next step.

First, select your Wood Fishing Rod. You can’t equip it traditionally, so just move it to your hotbar (or access it from your inventory), and your character will hold it ready to fish.
Hold M1 to cast your line, ensuring it lands in a body of water (the pier next to Simon the Fisherman is a great spot).
Then, simply watch the bobber, and when you see it ripple once or twice, click M1 again to reel in your catch. That’s the basic technique.
Keep in mind, this method doesn’t guarantee a catch every time. Often, you won’t catch anything at all. Sometimes, you’ll pull up junk, but the good news is Simon will count junk as a valid catch (hence the “fish” in quotation marks).
So, to summarize, cast your line, wait for the ripples, press M1, and reel in whatever you catch five times. We managed to catch only two actual fish, while the rest were Old Cups.

Once you’ve caught 5 “fish”, return to Simon the Fisherman to complete the quest. He will reward you with a tackle box. Open it and store your remaining worms inside to save inventory space for more important items.
