Nintendo Limits Switch 2 Preorders to Deter Scalpers

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and it’s expected to be in high demand. To help genuine players secure a unit, Nintendo is introducing a special pre-order system on its official online store.

On the My Nintendo Store, account holders can register their interest in pre-ordering the Nintendo Switch 2 console and specific accessories. You'll receive an invitation email when your spot in the queue arrives, which you must use within 72 hours. However, eligibility depends on your history with the original Switch and a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

According to the store's terms, invitation priority will be given to registrants who, as of April 2, 2025, have maintained at least 12 months of paid Nintendo Switch Online membership and have logged a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours.

Nintendo also states that invitations are non-transferable and will be sent to the email linked to the Nintendo Account used for registration. There is a limit of one system and one of each accessory per account during this invitation phase. Current options include the standard Nintendo Switch 2 or a bundle with Mario Kart World.

Orders will ship after purchase, with an estimated delivery date provided at checkout. Nintendo adds, "Please note that release-day delivery is not guaranteed due to order processing and shipping times."

While not explicitly stated, these measures appear designed to ensure that customers purchasing a Switch 2 through this program intend to use it themselves, rather than resell it at a premium.

Scalping has plagued the launch of many popular products. The PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and even Pokémon Trading Cards have all faced significant issues with resellers creating shortages.

Valve successfully managed demand for the Steam Deck with a verified queue system, linking purchases to established Steam accounts. Nintendo's approach with the My Nintendo Store seems to follow a similar, effective strategy.

While other retail avenues will exist for buying the Switch 2, this dedicated program should help committed Switch owners navigate the potential frenzy of securing a launch-day console.
