Obsidian's CEO Expresses Confidence in The Outer Worlds 2
Positive Outlook for Obsidian's Upcoming RPGs
In a recent interview with Limit Break Network, Urquhart confirmed that development on The Outer Worlds 2 is proceeding smoothly. He praised the dedicated team, many of whom worked on the original title, highlighting their experience and understanding of the game's vision. "I’m impressed with the team," he stated, emphasizing their commitment to delivering a high-quality sequel.
Urquhart candidly addressed the challenges faced by Obsidian, particularly the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the studio's acquisition by Microsoft. These factors, coupled with simultaneous development of Grounded and Pentiment, significantly stretched the team's resources. He acknowledged a period of intense pressure, even mentioning internal discussions about potentially halting The Outer Worlds 2 development to focus solely on Avowed. However, Obsidian ultimately persevered, maintaining their commitment to all projects.
"We got acquired, then Covid hit, and we were juggling Outer Worlds, its DLC, Avowed, Outer Worlds 2, Grounded, and Pentiment," Urquhart recalled, illustrating the demanding period.
Despite the difficulties, Urquhart expressed satisfaction with the outcomes, noting the success of Grounded and Pentiment. He also shared positive assessments of Avowed ("looking great") and The Outer Worlds 2 ("looking incredible"). While specifics regarding game content remain undisclosed, the recent delay of Avowed to 2025 suggests potential timeline adjustments for other projects.
Initially announced in 2021, The Outer Worlds 2 has seen limited updates. Urquhart acknowledged this lack of frequent news and the possibility of a launch date shift, mirroring the situation with Avowed. However, he reassured fans of Obsidian's dedication to quality, stating, "We will get there with all these games. Are they going to be on the timelines we originally thought? No. But we’re going to get there." Both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed are slated for release on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
