The PS Portal, designed by Sony, transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming powerhouse. It resembles an extended split-pad DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen seamlessly integrated between the grips. It enables you to stream your PS5 games at up to 60fps, offering the full suite of DualSense features such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface in lieu of the traditional touchpad. While it can stream games outside your home, a very stable, very fast internet connection is essential. Remember, the PS Portal is not a standalone device; it requires a PS5 to operate.

Excitingly, Sony has expanded the PS Portal's capabilities beyond just streaming from a PS5. With the latest updates, you can now stream games directly from Sony's PlayStation Now cloud service, eliminating the need for a PS5. This feature allows access to a vast library of over 120 games, including titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. To take advantage of this, you must subscribe to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, which costs $18 per month—a far more affordable option than purchasing a PS5 and additional games.

It's worth noting that you can replicate some of the PS Portal's functionality at home using the PS Remote Play app on a mobile device or other gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck. However, setting it up is more complex, and you'll miss out on some of the DualSense's unique features.

"The PlayStation Portal is a surprisingly delightful device that exceeded my initial skepticism. It offers a far superior experience compared to using a phone with a clip-on controller, and it performs better than I had anticipated. I appreciate the freedom it provides to play my PS5 games from anywhere with a decent WiFi connection, especially when the TV is occupied by my family playing the Switch. However, it's important to remember that the Portal isn't a standalone unit and absolutely requires a PS5 to function. The device's potential is slightly hampered by its current inability to connect to WiFi networks that require a web browser login and its lack of Bluetooth audio support. Despite these limitations, it's an excellent solution for PlayStation Remote Play, and if not for these caveats, it would be an essential accessory for every PS5 owner who enjoys handheld gaming or faces TV competition at home."
