Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Writer Hints

Exciting news for Star Wars fans: Shawn Levy, renowned for his work on *Deadpool & Wolverine*, is still hard at work on his upcoming Star Wars film. Jonathan Tropper, the writer behind the project, shared his enthusiasm with Screen Rant, saying, "I am [excited] too. I hope it's on the way sooner than you think." This offers a glimmer of hope that the film might be closer to fruition than many expected.

While much about Levy's movie remains shrouded in mystery, we do know it will take place after *The Rise of Skywalker*. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed this, stating, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This timeline positions the film as the first to explore the era following *The Rise of Skywalker*.

Kennedy also shared that Levy's movie will hit theaters after 2026's *The Mandalorian and Grogu*, which she is currently producing. Adding to the intrigue, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film. Despite the wait, which might extend into late 2026 or even 2027, Tropper's words suggest positive momentum.

Since the release of the less-than-stellar *Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker* in 2019, Disney has been cautious with its Star Wars films, cancelling projects like one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from *Game of Thrones* showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie planned for late 2026 was recently pulled from Disney's release calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in his Mando-verse, a *Dawn of the Jedi* movie led by James Mangold, and a *New Jedi Order* feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-*The Rise of Skywalker*. Despite some changes, including the departure of screenwriter Steven Knight after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars projects.

Disney's ambitious plans for the franchise don't end there. X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which will not continue the Skywalker Saga as initially speculated. Fans won't have to wait long for more Star Wars content, as *Andor* Season 2 is slated to premiere on Disney+ on April 22, featuring a triple premiere episode to kick things off.
