Sony Removes PS3 Games Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 from PS5 and PS4 in PS Plus Overhaul

Next month, a significant number of games will be removed from the PlayStation Plus library, impacting players who enjoy the service's extensive catalog. Among the titles being pulled are fan favorites such as Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the last playable versions of Sony's first-party titles Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. This removal will affect 22 games in total, set to leave the service on May 20, 2025.

PlayStation Plus is an essential online gaming service for PlayStation users, offering a range of benefits including free monthly games, exclusive trials, online multiplayer access, and special member discounts. Additionally, Extra and Premium members have access to a vast library of current and classic games, making it a valuable resource for gamers looking to explore a diverse range of titles.

As highlighted by Push Square, the upcoming removal of 22 games from the PS Plus library includes two notable first-party Sony PS3 games, both of which are set to be removed from the PS Plus Premium catalog. This action underscores the service's dynamic nature, where games can be added and removed periodically.

The removal of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 is particularly noteworthy as these games are no longer available for purchase on the PS Store. This makes the PS Plus Premium streaming service the final option for players to experience these titles without owning a PS3 and the games themselves. Both titles were only recently added to the library at the end of 2024, making their removal less than a year later quite surprising.

Developed by Insomniac Games, the Resistance series is known for its alternate history first-person shooter gameplay, following the studio's success with the Ratchet and Clank franchise. The series saw three releases on the PS3 before Insomniac shifted focus to other projects, including Marvel’s Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank titles.

While it's not common for Sony to remove first-party games from PS Plus, precedents exist, such as the unexpected removal of both Horizon gamesHorizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West — in August 2024. However, those games remained available for purchase, unlike Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, which will now be inaccessible on modern consoles.

Interestingly, Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution will continue to be available on the service. Additionally, the more recent first-party PS4 game InFamous: Second Son is also slated to leave PS Plus.

Insomniac's Resistance series has remained dormant for some time. In a recent revelation, Insomniac founder and outgoing president Ted Price mentioned a strong effort to develop Resistance 4, which ultimately did not come to fruition. This mirrors the fate of other series like Guerrilla's Killzone, which has also seen a decline in activity.
