The Meta Quest 3S unexpectedly outperformed major gaming consoles like Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch, securing the top spot as Amazon's best-selling console in 2024. This remarkable achievement is even more impressive considering its October launch.

The Quest 3S, a more affordable version of the Meta Quest 3, offers a compelling entry point into VR gaming. Its standalone functionality, eliminating the need for a powerful PC or console, and its wireless freedom, contribute significantly to its appeal. While VR remains niche, the Quest 3S's price and game library proved a winning combination.

Amazon's 2024 best-seller list highlights the Quest 3S's dominance. It ranked #11 overall in video game sales, trailing only gift cards, Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, and a few accessories. The PlayStation 5 Slim (#17) and Nintendo Switch (#53) lagged considerably behind. Notably, Xbox consoles were absent from the top 80, while the PlayStation 5 Pro was also missing. Only a Nintendo microSDXC card and the PlayStation DualSense controller ranked higher.

VR Accessibility Redefined

The absence of Sony's PlayStation VR2 from the list underscores the Quest 3S's advantage. While PSVR2 boasts a strong game selection, the Quest 3S's standalone nature offers greater convenience and accessibility. Its wireless operation and lack of reliance on external hardware make it a more attractive option for many consumers.

Interestingly, the discontinued Meta Quest 2 also appeared at #27, suggesting price sensitivity in the VR market. The original Meta Quest 3, however, failed to make the top 80. With the Quest 2 now unavailable and the Nintendo Switch 2 anticipated in 2025, the future of these rankings remains uncertain. However, the 2024 results strongly suggest a growing interest in affordable VR technology.
