The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know

The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their beloved game. Will their investment of time and money be rendered obsolete by a new iteration? This uncertainty is particularly pertinent given Rockstar's prioritization of live service over story DLC for GTA 5.

Speculation abounds regarding a potential "GTA Online 2," or whether the existing GTA Online will simply receive an upgrade. Concerns are valid: why invest now if a new version is on the horizon?

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed these concerns in a recent interview, drawing parallels to the company's handling of NBA 2K Online. NBA 2K Online, launched in 2012, co-existed successfully with its 2017 sequel, NBA 2K Online 2. Both games remained active, catering to their respective player bases.

Zelnick stated, while not explicitly referencing GTA Online, that Take-Two generally supports legacy titles with active communities. He highlighted the simultaneous success of both NBA 2K Online versions as an example of this commitment. This suggests that a future GTA Online iteration might not necessarily replace the original. Continued player engagement with the current GTA Online could lead to its continued support alongside any potential sequel.

However, much remains unknown about GTA 6. With only a trailer and a release window confirmed, Rockstar needs to provide more concrete information soon, especially given the proximity to the announced September release of Borderlands 4. Zelnick's comments offer a degree of reassurance, but the ultimate fate of GTA Online remains to be seen.
