Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action
The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a thrilling surprise: the reveal of both Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. This announcement marks a significant milestone, celebrating Team Ninja's 30th anniversary and declaring 2025 "The Year of the Ninja."
A New Era for the Ninja Gaiden Franchise
Developed by the collaborative forces of Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 is the long-awaited mainline sequel, arriving thirteen years after Ninja Gaiden 3. The game promises to maintain the series' signature blend of brutally challenging yet intensely rewarding gameplay. The partnership with Xbox is a natural progression, given their history of collaborations on franchises like Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden 2.
Meet Yakumo: The New Protagonist
Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces a fresh face to the franchise: Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, striving to achieve Master Ninja status. PlatinumGames' Art Director, Tomoko Nishii, describes Yakumo's design as a character capable of standing alongside the legendary Ryu Hayabusa.
Yuji Nakao, the game's Producer and Director from PlatinumGames, explains the reasoning behind the new protagonist: "We wanted a new hero to make the series more approachable for new players, while ensuring long-time fans enjoy Ryu Hayabusa's significant role in the story." Rest assured, Ryu Hayabusa remains a pivotal figure, posing a formidable challenge for Yakumo and providing a key storyline element.
Evolved Combat: A Fusion of Styles
Ninja Gaiden 4 retains the series' trademark breakneck speed and brutal combat, enhanced by the introduction of a new fighting style for Yakumo: the Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style. Masazaku Hirayama, Team Ninja's Director, highlights Yakumo's dual combat styles – Raven Style and Nue Style – while assuring fans that the action remains true to the Ninja Gaiden spirit. Nakao emphasizes the fusion of Team Ninja's challenging gameplay with PlatinumGames' dynamic action. The game is currently 70-80% complete and in the polishing phase.
