I'm generally a practical spender. Essentials and the occasional sale-priced video game usually cover my purchases. It wasn't until last year that I even considered buying something as frivolous as a LEGO set. Despite loving LEGOs as a child, I'd somehow outgrown them. This is partly due to the high cost of LEGO sets, especially those based on movies or video games. That's why it took me so long to buy the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant. It's been on sale for under $50 since October, but only recently did I decide my desk needed a new, decidedly unusual, potted plant.

I initially considered this set after seeing IGN's build. Being a lifelong fan of Mario games, it seemed like the perfect way to show my love for the franchise. LEGO's botanical line has lovely flower sets, but none are as delightfully terrifying as this little guy.

Having built it, I'm thrilled to have it on my desk. It evokes the Mushroom Kingdom, a fun little project cultivated during work hours. While the finished product is fantastic, the building process was equally enjoyable. Completed in an afternoon, it remained engaging the entire time. It's my only LEGO Nintendo set, but this experience makes me want more.

LEGOs are expensive. With adult-targeted sets costing $200+, it's easy to overspend. Unless you're wealthy, there's a balance between treating yourself and financial ruin. This Mario set, under $50, felt justifiable. The hours spent building it, and the daily happiness it brings, make it worthwhile. Is that happiness worth over $50? Probably. But that's my limit.
