From the moment it was revealed, Marvel Rivals drew immediate comparisons to Overwatch due to their striking similarities. Both games fall into the category of competitive multiplayer hero shooters, utilizing similar mechanics and gameplay systems. While Marvel Rivals showcases Marvel heroes and villains, it mirrors Overwatch's structure as a free-to-play title, monetized through live services and continuously refreshed with new characters to keep the experience vibrant.
Since its launch in December, Marvel Rivals has seen explosive growth in popularity, which some speculate has come at the expense of Overwatch 2's player base. Blizzard's game is reportedly losing ground as NetEase's Marvel Rivals attracts a significant number of players.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller addressed this new competitive landscape. "We're obviously in a new competitive landscape that I think, for Overwatch, we've never really been in before, to this extent where there's another game that's so similar to the one that we've created," Keller stated. Surprisingly, he viewed the situation as "exciting" and praised Marvel Rivals for taking ideas established by Overwatch in a "different direction."
Keller acknowledged that Marvel Rivals' success has prompted a shift in Blizzard's approach to Overwatch 2, emphasizing that "this is no longer about playing it safe." In response, Blizzard has announced significant changes coming to Overwatch 2 in 2025. The roadmap includes new content alongside fundamental shifts in core gameplay, such as the introduction of hero perks and the return of loot boxes.
The gaming community is keenly watching to see if these changes will reignite interest in Overwatch 2. Launched in 2016, and with Overwatch 2 following in 2022, Blizzard's title has been struggling to maintain its player base. Recent Steam data shows Overwatch 2's concurrent player peak at a low of 37,046 over the last 24 hours, while Marvel Rivals boasts a robust 310,287 concurrent players, remaining in the top 10 most-played games on the platform.
Overwatch 2 continues to face challenges, reflected in its 'mostly negative' user review rating on Steam. The game became the worst user-reviewed title on the platform in August 2023, primarily due to backlash over its monetization model. The transition from the premium original Overwatch to a free-to-play sequel in 2022 left many players dissatisfied, especially after the cancellation of the much-anticipated PvE Hero mode, which was seen as a key feature justifying the sequel's existence.
