Choosing Your Path in Citizen Sleeper 2: A Class Guide
Citizen Sleeper 2 begins by presenting players with three distinct classes: Operator, Machinist, and Extractor. The optimal choice hinges entirely on your preferred playstyle. Based on a completed playthrough, here's a breakdown of each class, considering both abilities and roleplaying potential.
Operator
The Operator starts with a bonus in Interface, foundational levels in Intuit and Engage, and lacks Engineer skills entirely. Endure is also unavailable for leveling. Their unique ability allows them to trade Stress for a re-roll of their lowest die.
While powerful with upgraded abilities, the Operator presents a steeper early-game challenge. The Interface skill is valuable, but the re-roll ability isn't a guaranteed advantage. Roleplaying-wise, the Operator offers flexibility, adaptable to various character archetypes.
Machinist
The Machinist begins with a bonus in Engineer, base levels in Interface and Intuit, and no Endure. Engage remains unlevelable. Their ability involves sacrificing Stress to add +2 to their lowest die, further enhanced as the game progresses, while also reducing Stress on positive outcomes.
This class proved to be a favorite during my initial playthrough. The ability to mitigate difficult situations is incredibly useful, particularly given the frequent need for Engineer and Interface checks. The inherent Stress reduction is a significant advantage, as Stress management is a key challenge. Roleplaying-wise, this class suits players drawn to the game's technical and mechanical aspects.
Extractor
The Extractor starts with a bonus in Endure, base levels in Engineer and Engage, and no Interface. Intuit is unlevelable. Their ability allows them to trade Stress for a +2 bonus to their crew's lowest die, further upgradable to benefit various crew members.
This ability is highly effective for mitigating the risks associated with Contracts. The initial Endure bonus is also beneficial, given the game's frequent Endure checks. However, the abundance of crew members skilled in Endure and Engage might lead to a surplus in those areas. Roleplaying-wise, this is the class for players who prefer a more physically robust and resilient character.
