Dark Regards is the creative brainchild of comedian, writer, and musician Dave Hill, paired with the artistic talents of Artyom Topilin, known for works like Cruel Universe and I Hate This Place. This four-issue series draws inspiration from Hill's real-life adventure of forming a fictional Satanic metal band named Witch Taint, which led to a whirlwind of chaos.
Here's how Oni Press describes the series:
Two decades ago, Dave Hill and his first band set out to rock their high school auditorium with a fury of heavy metal hellfire. They failed spectacularly. Years later, Dave has carved out a new path as a burgeoning star in the New York comedy scene—where being laughed at is the goal, not a mishap. But when the allure of Norwegian black metal rekindles Dave's rock ambitions, he crafts an over-the-top alter ego and a band to match, reigniting his long-forgotten rock 'n roll dream. Yet, when Dave's internet-fueled rumors about Witch Taint—a band so extreme it demands the removal of all sharp objects—reach Europe, his tale spirals out of control. Norway's most extreme black metal enthusiasts come seeking vengeance, putting everything Dave cherishes in the line of fire (or rather, the metaphorical axes of black metal).
Reflecting on the series' origin, Hill shared, “A few years back, driven by my late-night obsession with Norwegian black metal, I emailed a Norwegian black metal record label in my underwear, claiming their bands were subpar without ever listening to them and pitching my non-existent, ultra-extreme band Witch Taint. What started as a private jest turned into months of correspondence that the internet eventually exposed to the world, leading to unexpected chaos. Now, beyond my wildest dreams, this tale has transformed into my first comic book series, Dark Regards, co-created with the talented Artyom Topilin. Missing out on any issue would be sheer madness.”
Dark Regards #1 is available for $4.99 and will hit the shelves on May 13, 2025.For more exclusive comic book previews, don't miss the final issue of TMNT: The Last Ronin II and the The Dark Knight Returns-inspired Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell.
