In the whirlwind of battling countless enemies in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, a compelling gameplay element shines through: duels. A returning feature from earlier games, these intense one-on-one encounters add a strategic layer to the chaotic battles. Here's how they work.
What Are Duels in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?
Duels, a staple since Dynasty Warriors 4, make their triumphant return in Origins. While initially unavailable, you'll unlock the ability to duel in Chapter 2. However, not just any officer will do; you can only challenge high-ranking enemy commanders. When the opportunity arises, quickly press R1 and L1 simultaneously to initiate the duel—but act fast, this window is brief!
The duel unfolds in a designated arena surrounded by soldiers. You'll face the enemy commander in a head-to-head battle, unlike the usual free-for-all combat. A progress bar at the top of the screen tracks both your and your opponent's success. Each successful hit advances your meter. Conversely, your opponent's hits fill their meter.
The objective? Completely fill your meter by landing enough blows on your opponent. Your starting position isn't determined by health, but by morale. A winning streak fills your meter more, while losing fills your opponent's. A balanced fight shows even meters. Given the one-on-one nature, mastering your opponent's moves, timing dodges and parries, and maintaining distance (especially against Battle Arts) is crucial. Remember, time is limited, but reckless aggression is rarely rewarded.

Victory in a duel inflicts massive damage on your opponent and grants a significant morale boost. Defeat, however, results in substantial damage to you and a heavy morale drop for your army—potentially disastrous late in a battle. Interestingly, if neither side wins, there are no penalties; the duel simply ends, and the battle continues. However, be warned: some duels are inescapable. Losing these automatically fails the mission; winning guarantees victory. While duels offer the potential for a significant battlefield advantage, underestimating your opponent can lead to devastating consequences.
And there you have it—dueling in Dynasty Warriors: Origins.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins is available now on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
