Rockstar's latest release, Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced, hit Steam on March 4 to a lukewarm reception, reflected in its 'mixed' user review rating. Only 54% of the 19,772 user reviews were positive, a stark contrast to the 'very positive' rating of the original GTA 5, which is now unlisted on Steam. This makes GTA 5 Enhanced the lowest-rated GTA game on the platform, narrowly beating Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition, which sits at 66% positive reviews.
The Enhanced version brings several new features to PC players that were previously exclusive to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S versions of GTA Online. These include access to Hao’s Special Works for vehicles and performance upgrades, animal encounters, and the ability to purchase a GTA+ Membership. The update also promises improved graphics and faster loading times. Importantly, it's a free upgrade for existing GTA 5 PC owners, who can migrate their Story Mode and Online progress to the new version.

Despite the enticing updates, the main grievance among players seems to be issues with account migration. Many negative reviews highlight frustration with the migration process, with some players unable to transfer their GTA Online profiles. One player expressed strong disappointment, unwilling to abandon nearly 700 hours of gameplay just to switch to the new version. Others echoed similar sentiments, criticizing the lack of support from Rockstar and the perceived downgrade from the original version.
Despite these challenges, GTA 5 Enhanced has seen significant engagement, with a peak concurrent player count of 187,059 on Steam since its launch. However, the rocky rollout has raised concerns among PC gamers about the future release of Grand Theft Auto 6, which is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in the fall of 2025, with no confirmed PC release date yet. A former Rockstar developer has urged PC gamers to remain patient and trust in the studio's plans.
In related news, Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, is embroiled in a lawsuit against PlayerAuctions for unauthorized GTA 5 content sales. Additionally, Rockstar has acquired Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition developer Video Games Deluxe, rebranding it as Rockstar Australia.
