Mastering Targeting in Hyper Light Breaker: Lock-On vs. Free Cam
Hyper Light Breaker's lock-on system, while powerful, isn't always the best approach. This guide clarifies how to use it effectively and when to switch to the free camera. Many game mechanics are subtly introduced, so understanding targeting is key to mastering the game.
How to Target Enemies
To lock onto an enemy, simply center your view on them and press the right analog stick (R3). The game will usually identify the closest target, unless it's surrounded by others. A reticle will appear, and the camera will zoom slightly.
Line of sight isn't required; as long as the enemy is visible on-screen and within range, you can lock on. Your character's movement will be adjusted to circle the target, potentially making quick-moving enemies challenging to track. The camera's focus on the target can lead to unexpected directional changes during movement.
To switch targets while locked on, use the right analog stick to select the nearest enemy within range. To release the lock-on and return to free camera mode, press the right analog stick again (or use the alternative keybind in the settings). The lock-on will also automatically disengage if you move too far from your target.
Lock-On vs. Free Camera: When to Use Which
While lock-on is beneficial in specific situations, it can be detrimental in others. It's ideal for one-on-one encounters, such as boss fights or against strong (yellow health bar) enemies – but only after clearing weaker enemies.
The locked camera limits your peripheral vision, making it difficult to manage multiple enemies. Free camera mode is generally superior for group combat or against easily defeated enemies. Lock-on can hinder your ability to react to threats outside your immediate focus.
For mini-boss or boss fights, lock-on is advantageous once the surrounding enemies are eliminated. Maintain free camera mode until the area is clear, then lock onto the boss for focused attacks.
Consider extraction encounters: Prioritize clearing regular enemies before locking onto the mini-boss to avoid being overwhelmed. Strategically switching between free camera and lock-on maximizes your effectiveness.
