Jason Momoa, known for his role as Aquaman in the now-defunct DC Extended Universe (DCEU), is set to bring the iconic character Lobo to life in the upcoming DC Universe (DCU) film "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow," slated for release in June 2026. Lobo, an alien interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter from the planet Czarnia, boasts superhuman strength and immortality. Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo first appeared in "Omega Men #3" in 1983 and shares the fate of being the last survivor of his world, similar to Superman.
Momoa, who has expressed that Lobo is his favorite comic book character, is thrilled to take on the role, highlighting the aesthetic similarities between himself and Lobo. In a conversation with ScreenRant, Momoa teased fans about what to expect, emphasizing his excitement and nervousness. "Well, this is the role I've always wanted to play," he said. "That’s the comic I loved, so I'm really nervous about it. It’s kind of a no-brainer to play this character. It's pretty big. I don't want to give away too much, but I mean, we look pretty dead on, exactly like the character, and he’s pretty rough and gruff and… I'll say the bike’s really cool."
While Lobo's appearance in "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" will be fleeting, Momoa confirmed, "It’s her movie, so it's great. I just come in for a little bit." This film, which is based on the graphic novel by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Norgueira, follows the story of an alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll who seeks Supergirl's help to avenge her father's murder by the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills.
The cast of "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" includes Milly Alcock as Supergirl (Kara Zor-El), Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, David Krumholtz as Supergirl's father Zor-El, and Emily Beecham as Supergirl's mother. The film marks the second entry in the new DCU, following James Gunn's "Superman" set to release this summer, with the DCU "Clayface" movie scheduled for September 2026.
In January, DC co-chief James Gunn shared the first photo of Milly Alcock as Supergirl, signaling the start of production on the film. This announcement was made via a post on Bluesky, adding to the anticipation surrounding the new DCU slate.
From Aquaman to Lobo, Jason Momoa is crossing DC universes.
