MMPR Rita

The upcoming beat 'em up, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind, is packed with nods to the franchise's rich history, including last year's reunion special, Once and Always. The game features Robo Rita as its primary antagonist, a surprising reveal from Summer Games Fest 2024. This retro-style brawler offers five-player co-op, enemies spanning the first three seasons, and even 3D rail-shooter sequences. It's launching on PC and consoles later this year.

Power Rangers fans have experienced a whirlwind of emotions recently. Following Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Always and Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury, the franchise has been relatively quiet. Once and Always saw the original team reunite to thwart a robotic Rita Repulsa's plan to alter the past. The special included numerous Easter eggs and touching tributes to deceased actors Thuy Trang and Jason David Frank.

Robo Rita's return, from the Netflix special Once and Always, as the main villain in Rita's Rewind, is a key plot point. Digital Eclipse content editor Dan Amrich explained to Time Express that Robo Rita's time-travel attempt in Once and Always provided a perfect in-universe connection for the game's storyline.

Amrich also discussed pitching the game to Hasbro, who were looking to expand their popular franchises. Inspiration for Rita's Rewind came from classic 2D brawlers popular during the original MMPR's peak, ensuring plenty of Easter eggs for dedicated fans.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind serves as a loving tribute to the franchise, blending classic gameplay with recent lore. While its release is slated for later this year, fans can currently experience a crossover with ARK: Survival Ascended.
