The long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 has finally arrived, and as previously reported, it boasts impressive backward compatibility with Switch 1 games. However, Nintendo is going above and beyond by introducing specially enhanced versions of Switch 1 games for the Switch 2. These enhancements aren't just about improved graphics and smoother framerates; they offer a whole new gaming experience.

Nintendo has outlined three main categories of games that can be enjoyed on the Switch 2. First, there are native Switch 2 games, designed exclusively for the new system and not playable on the original Switch. Second, compatible Switch 1 games that can be seamlessly played on the Switch 2 by inserting their cartridges into the console. Finally, there are Switch 2 Edition games, which are enhanced versions of Switch 1 titles, featuring new features and performance improvements when played on the Switch 2.

This classification does not include the classic games available through Nintendo Switch Online, which offers a rich library spanning the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and now the GameCube.

So What Comes in a Switch 2 Edition Game?

During the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, it became clear that Nintendo is committed to providing extra value for players opting for the Switch 2 Edition of a Switch 1 game.

Take, for example, Super Mario Party Jamboree. The Switch 2 Edition introduces Jamboree TV, a new suite of content that leverages the Joy-Con 2's mouse controls, the Switch 2's microphone, and the separately sold USB-C camera. Along with these innovative features, players can expect upgraded resolution up to 1440p in TV mode, enhanced frame rates, new minigames, and improved online functionality.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, a cross-gen title, will support mouse controls with Joy-Con 2 and offer multiple display modes. Quality Mode delivers 60fps at 4K when docked or 1080p at 60fps in handheld mode, while Performance Mode achieves 120fps at 1080p when docked or 120fps at 720p in handheld mode. Both modes support HDR, enhancing the visual experience.

Other Switch 2 Edition titles, such as Kirby and the Forgotten Land, will include new story content with the Star-Crossed World add-on. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will benefit from additional support for the Zelda Notes service within the Nintendo Switch App, providing players with guides and in-game assistance.

For games like Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the Switch 2 Edition will primarily focus on performance and resolution enhancements.

When are the Switch 2 Edition Games Coming?

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, which is also when the first wave of Switch 2 Edition games will be available. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will receive their Switch 2 Editions on launch day.

Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV will follow on July 24, 2025, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land’s update will arrive on August 28, 2025. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A are slated for release sometime in 2025, though specific dates have yet to be announced.

If not, you can purchase the Switch 2 Edition at retail, easily identifiable by its new red-colored physical game case. Digital versions will feature a prominent Switch 2 logo, ensuring you know you're getting the right edition for your console.

If you already own the Switch 1 version and want the Switch 2 Edition upgrades, you'll need to buy an upgrade pack from Nintendo. These will be available at select retailers, the official My Nintendo Store, and the Nintendo eShop. The price of these upgrade packs has not yet been disclosed.
