The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal this morning lends significant credence to the rumors about Joy-Con mouse functionality. A striking scene in the reveal trailer shows detached Joy-Cons placed attachment-side down on a surface, connecting to what appear to be flat-bottomed connectors. These then smoothly glide across the surface, mimicking mouse movement on a mousepad. A closer look even reveals what seems to be a slider pad on one connector, further supporting this theory.
Pre-reveal speculation centered on an internal Joy-Con sensor, similar to those found in computer mice, enabling this functionality. However, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm this feature or its implications. While fans envision uses in traditionally mouse-and-keyboard-friendly games like Civilization, Nintendo's history suggests potential for innovative, first-party software applications. The possibilities remain excitingly open.
Despite the unknowns surrounding potential mouse support (and the purpose of that mysterious new Joy-Con button), we do have some confirmed details. The console is officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, launching in 2025, with a new Mario Kart title in development. Backward compatibility with the original Switch is assured, and a dedicated Direct in April will unveil more about upcoming software. Stay tuned for all our Nintendo Switch 2 coverage.
