How Big is the Nintendo Switch 2?

Author: Skylar Mar 18,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer immediately reveals a significant size increase compared to its predecessor. As the original Joy-Cons detach, the tablet section visibly expands, showcasing a substantial upgrade. This shift suggests Nintendo's move away from compact handhelds towards larger portable devices, aligning with competitors like the Steam Deck and iPad.

While Nintendo hasn't released official dimensions, we can estimate the Switch 2's size based on the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, a Switch 2 mockup by peripheral designer Genki allowed for hands-on measurement. The trailer's design closely matches this mockup, suggesting the measurements are highly accurate.

Estimated Switch 2 Dimensions:

Screen Size: We estimate an 8-inch screen (diagonal measurement), aligning with earlier rumors. This translates to approximately 177mm wide and 99mm tall. This represents a nearly 30% increase in diagonal size and a 66% increase in area compared to the original Switch's 6.2-inch screen. Compared to the Switch Lite (5.5-inch), the increase is 45% diagonally and 111% in area. Against the Switch OLED (7-inch), it's a 14% diagonal and 30% area increase. Even against the Steam Deck's 7-inch and 7.4-inch (OLED) screens, the Switch 2's screen is larger (8% and 11% larger in area than the Steam Deck OLED respectively).

Overall Console Size: Measurements of the Genki mockup indicate the Switch 2 is approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall, a roughly 25% increase over the original Switch (239mm x 102mm). This makes it 61% larger than the Switch Lite and 12% smaller than the Steam Deck. Depth is estimated to be similar to the original Switch.

Joy-Con Size: The trailer suggests slightly taller Joy-Cons, estimated at 32mm wide and 115mm tall—the same width as the originals but 13mm taller, a 13% increase.

Screen Unit Size: Subtracting Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, the screen unit is estimated at 200mm long and 115mm tall—approximately 31% larger than the original. This size comfortably accommodates the 8-inch screen with estimated bezels of 11mm on the sides and 8mm on the top and bottom.

While these are estimations, the Genki mockup provides confidence in their accuracy. Expect a console roughly 25% larger than the original Switch. Further details on the Switch 2's features, including potential mouse-like capabilities and the extra USB-C port, are available in other articles.
