Bagon, a Dragon-type Pokémon, evolves into the formidable Salamence. In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, you can capture Bagon if you're playing Pokémon Violet. However, if you're playing Pokémon Scarlet, Bagon and its evolutions are exclusive to Pokémon Violet, meaning you'll need to trade or transfer one to complete your Paldea Pokédex.

Updated on January 13, 2025 by Renri Seong: Bagon evolves into the mighty Salamence, a key addition to any Pokémon Violet team. This guide has been enhanced with detailed information on Salamence's stats, type effectiveness, and recommended moves to help you decide if it's worth capturing.

Where to Find Bagon

Bagon Location in Pokemon Violet

Bagon can be found in several locations within Pokémon Violet. Start your search in East Province (Area Three), known for its expansive caves. If you're still in the starting area, head to South Province (Area Five) where you can catch a fixed spawn Bagon on a mountain southwest of the bridge connecting the grassy and rocky regions.

Another prime spot is Dalizapa Passage, north of The Great Crater of Paldea and south of Glaseado Mountain. Here, you can ride Koraidon or Miraidon to access a deep hole in the ground with a Pokémon Center. This cave is a hotspot for rare Pokémon like Bagon and Frigibax.

For those who enjoy Tera Raids, you can encounter Bagon in 3-star Tera Raids, which become available after earning three gym badges. Bagon from these raids may have a different Tera Type and potentially a Hidden Ability, making them a valuable catch.

How to Get Bagon in Pokemon Scarlet

How to Trade and Transfer Pokemon

Since Bagon and its evolutions are not available in Pokémon Scarlet, you must trade with a Pokémon Violet player or transfer Bagon using Pokémon HOME. To trade, join or create a Group via the Union Circle, requiring a Nintendo Switch Online Membership. Alternatively, transfer Bagon from other games like Pokémon Sword/Shield (Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, or directly from Pokémon HOME.

  1. Open Pokémon HOME, select the game from which you'll transfer Bagon.
  2. Move Bagon to your Basic Box and save.
  3. Open your Pokémon Scarlet file and transfer Bagon from the Basic Box to one of your Scarlet PC Boxes.
  4. Save and exit.

Upon reopening Pokémon Scarlet, Bagon will be in the designated PC Box, and you'll have its Dex Entry completed.

How to Evolve Bagon into Shelgon and Salamence

What Level Does Bagon Evolve

To evolve Bagon into Shelgon, raise its level to 30. Then, level Shelgon up to 50 to evolve it into Salamence. The quickest way to level up is by using auto-battle against Pokémon of similar levels, such as Chansey found in East Province (Area Two), North Province (Areas One-Three), Casseroya Lake, and West Province (Areas Two-Three).

Alternatively, use Exp. Candy to speed up the process. Exp. Candy L or XL will significantly boost levels, while Exp. Candy M requires more pieces but is still effective. You can also catch Shelgon and Salamence directly from 4-star and 5/6-star Tera Raids, respectively.

Salamence's move set leans towards physical attacks, aligning with its higher Attack stat. Opt for Dragon Claw over Dragon Breath to capitalize on its physical prowess. To counter its Fairy and Rock weaknesses, teach it Iron Head using TM099.

While Salamence's Special Attack is respectable, you can also train it as a special attacker with a Timid (+Spd, -Attk) Nature. This setup would enhance moves like Draco Meteor and Flamethrower, making Salamence a versatile combatant.
