Rumors are swirling that a Nintendo Switch 2 port of the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 might hit the shelves by the end of 2025. Additionally, there's talk of a next-gen upgrade for the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. According to GameReactor, insiders close to Rockstar Games have hinted at a Switch 2 version of the beloved Wild West epic, alongside a "next-gen upgrade patch" designed to enhance the game's performance on current-gen consoles. While specifics remain elusive, these sources suggest that both the port and the upgrade could be released as early as later this year.
This rumor is supported by similar reports from Nintenduo, which claims the Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is expected to launch within Take-Two's current fiscal year, ending March 31, 2026. It's still up in the air whether the game will be available digitally or as a physical copy.
When Red Dead Redemption 2 first launched in 2018, it was hailed as a "masterpiece," earning a perfect 10/10 score from IGN's Red Dead Redemption 2 review, which praised it as "a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era."
Given these developments, the prospect of Red Dead Redemption 2 coming to the Switch 2 isn't entirely unexpected. During a Q&A session with investors following Take-Two's latest financial results, CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's new platform. He highlighted improved support for third-party publishers, noting, "We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform." Zelnick added, "Historically, being a third-party in the Nintendo business has been a bit challenging. I think Nintendo has been very forthcoming in addressing that. And we're stepping up too, because we have great optimism for the platform. In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis, we obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalog opportunities as well."

Take-Two has confirmed plans to bring Civilization 7 (launching on June 5), the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series (exact titles and release dates still unknown), and Borderlands 4 (set for September 12) to the Nintendo Switch 2. These titles are not surprising, as Take-Two has a history of publishing these franchises on the original Switch. However, Zelnick's comments suggest that the door is open for more releases, particularly from Take-Two's extensive back catalog. While GTA 6 might not make the cut, classics like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 could be in the running.
