A report from Insider Gaming reveals a complete reboot of the Alaskan extraction shooter initially codenamed Project Maverick within the Far Cry universe. Originally planned as a multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7, internal reviews led Ubisoft to significantly alter development. Despite positive employee and tester feedback, resource allocation shifted primarily to Project Blackbird (Far Cry 7), ultimately ending the multiplayer component when the technical team was reassigned.

Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio specializing in development support, now leads the project. Most of the original development team has transitioned to the next Far Cry installment.

Insider Tom Henderson (mid-December 2024) describes Far Cry 7 as a tense, desperate experience where time is the ultimate enemy. The plot centers on the protagonist's family, kidnapped by a mysterious cult conducting horrifying hallucinogen experiments on animals and children. Players must rescue their family within a 72 in-game hour (24 real-time hour) deadline, making time management a critical gameplay element.

A prominent feature is a wristwatch timer, constantly reminding players of the dwindling time. This intensifies the pressure, forcing strategic, rapid decision-making. Far Cry 7 promises a unique experience where every second and choice carries significant weight.
