The previous generation, the Sony XM4, was already an exceptional headphone, but the XM5 introduces key improvements in noise cancellation and comfort. It now features a second processor and double the number of microphones dedicated to filtering out ambient noise. The redesigned earcups fit more snugly on the ear, creating a better seal and enhancing passive noise isolation. The noise cancellation is markedly better than that of the XM4 and virtually any other noise-canceling headset in its price range.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 also boasts a sleeker redesign with a new style of headband adjustment. The band is wider for better weight distribution, and the earcup padding is now made of a luxurious synthetic leather material that's softer and more comfortable, allowing for hours of wear. However, one minor drawback is that the XM5 can no longer be folded inward; it can only swivel, making it less compact.

Despite this, the Sony WH-1000XM5 retains the excellent battery life of the XM4, offering over 30 hours on a single charge, even with ANC activated. It also supports fast charging via USB Type-C.
