Ubisoft's highly anticipated Star Wars Outlaws has reportedly underperformed sales expectations, impacting the company's share price. Initial projections for the game's success have been revised downward, raising concerns about Ubisoft's financial outlook.
Ubisoft's Financial Hopes Tied to Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin's Creed Shadows
Stock Price Decline Follows Disappointing Sales Figures
Star Wars Outlaws was positioned by Ubisoft as a key title to bolster its financial performance. While critical reception has been generally positive, sales have fallen short of expectations, leading to a significant drop in Ubisoft's share price on September 3rd. This followed a similar decline the previous day.
Ubisoft had heavily invested in Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin's Creed Shadows (AC Shadows), identifying them as crucial long-term assets in their Q1 2024-25 sales report. The company aimed to leverage these releases to improve its overall financial situation. The report also noted a 15% increase in session days across consoles and PC, primarily driven by Games-as-a-Service titles. Monthly active users (MAUs) reached 38 million, a 7% year-on-year increase.
Reports describe Star Wars Outlaws sales as "sluggish." J.P. Morgan analyst Daniel Kerven, as reported by Reuters, noted that the game's sales have "struggled to meet our sales expectations despite positive critical reviews," prompting a reduction in his sales projection from 7.5 million units to 5.5 million units through March 2025.
Following the game's August 30th release, Ubisoft's share price experienced a two-day decline. Monday saw a 5.1% drop, followed by a further 2.4% decrease on Tuesday morning. This pushed the company's stock to its lowest point since 2015, adding to an overall decline of over 30% since the beginning of the year.
Despite positive critical reviews, player reception, as reflected by a 4.5 out of 10 user score on Metacritic, appears less enthusiastic. However, Game8 awarded Star Wars Outlaws a 90/100 rating, calling it "an exceptional game that does justice to the Star Wars franchise."
