In a recent interview, Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais clarified that SteamOS is not designed to overthrow Windows. This statement comes as part of a broader discussion about Valve's intentions and the role of SteamOS in the gaming ecosystem.

During an interview with the French site Frandroid on January 9, 2025, Griffais addressed the notion of SteamOS as a "Windows killer." This question was prompted by Valve president Gabe Newell's 2012 critique of Windows 8, which he accused of damaging the ecosystem with its new UI and integrated store.

Griffais emphasized that Valve's focus is not on capturing market share or driving users away from Windows. "If a user has a good experience on Windows, there's no problem," he stated. "Our goal is to create a system with different objectives and priorities. If it becomes a compelling alternative for desktop users, that's fantastic because it provides more choices. But converting users who are already satisfied with Windows is not our aim."

SteamOS aims to offer gamers an alternative platform, particularly for PCs and handheld devices, enhancing user options especially for those focused on gaming.
