Nintendo Switch 2 Direct: April 2, 2025

After months of speculation and leaks, Nintendo finally unveiled its next-generation console. A short teaser trailer, released January 16th, showcased a sleek design retaining the hybrid functionality of the original Switch, but with significant upgrades.

The trailer highlighted a larger display and a wider, more stable kickstand. The Joy-Cons have been redesigned with magnetic connection, replacing the original rails. A welcome addition is a new USB-C port on the console itself.

Regarding backwards compatibility, Nintendo confirmed that both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games will be playable, although some titles may have limited or no support. Specific details will be revealed later on the Nintendo website. Nintendo Switch Online functionality will also carry over.

Switch 2 Officially Announced

While no exclusive titles were officially announced, the trailer hinted at a new Mario Kart game (possibly Mario Kart 9), and rumors suggest Gotham Knights may be coming to the Switch 2. Confirmation on these and other titles is promised during a dedicated Nintendo Direct on April 2, 2025.

For a hands-on experience before launch, Nintendo is hosting "Nintendo Switch 2 Experience" events in major cities worldwide.

Ticket registration opens January 17th, 2025, at 12:00 P.M. PT / 2:00 P.M. CT / 3:00 P.M. ET, closing January 26th, 2025, at 11:59 P.M. local time for each location. Selection is random, and a Nintendo Account is required.
