Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: A Turn-Based RPG Inspired by Classics
Sandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is making waves with its unique blend of turn-based and real-time mechanics. Drawing inspiration from the Belle Epoque era of France and iconic JRPGs like Final Fantasy and Persona, the game aims to create a fresh take on a beloved genre.
A Fusion of Styles
The game seamlessly integrates real-time elements into its turn-based combat system. While players input actions in a turn-based format, they must also react swiftly to enemy attacks, adding a layer of strategic depth reminiscent of titles such as Persona and Sea of Stars.
Creative director Guillaume Broche, in interviews with gaming publications, highlighted the influence of classic JRPGs, particularly the Final Fantasy VIII, IX, and X era, on the game's core mechanics and design philosophy. While acknowledging the inspiration, Broche emphasizes that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not a mere imitation but a reflection of his personal experiences and creative vision. Persona's influence is also evident, particularly in the dynamic camera movements and menu design.
Gameplay and Story
The narrative centers around preventing the enigmatic Paintress from unleashing death once more. Exploration takes place in a unique open world featuring gravity-defying environments like the Flying Waters, encouraging experimentation and creative problem-solving. Players have complete control over their party members, utilizing their unique traversal abilities to navigate the world and solve environmental puzzles. Broche even encourages players to experiment with unconventional strategies and character builds.
The development team's ambition is clear: to create a game that resonates with players on an emotional level, much like the classics that inspired them. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
