The Star Wars universe is set to expand with exciting new animated projects, as highlighted at Star Wars Celebration Japan. Athena Portillo, Vice President of Animation at Lucasfilm, shared insights with IGN about two eagerly anticipated series: "Tales of the Underworld" and "Maul: Shadow Lord." These series promise to deepen the lore and bring fresh narratives to beloved characters.
Portillo expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Sam Witwer, the voice behind Darth Maul, on "Maul: Shadow Lord." She emphasized Witwer's integral role in developing the character's depth and lore, working closely with head writer and supervising director, as well as Lucasfilm's CCO Dave Filoni. "He's involved with the character depth of Maul because both him and Dave Filoni created the character together in animation," Portillo explained. "He gets to read the scripts, watch the whip reels, and provide input on everything from color to character development."
Darth Maul's journey from a supporting villain to a Star Wars icon is a testament to the character's enduring appeal. Portillo likened Maul to iconic horror figures like Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees, noting his repeated returns despite apparent demises. "We are diving into Maul's history and exploring that in the stories," she said, promising a deeper look into the life of this eternal villain.

Portillo highlighted the significant advancements in Lucasfilm Animation's production techniques, noting improvements in animation, lighting, effects, matte paintings, and asset creation. She shared how Filoni challenged the team to push beyond their comfort zones post-Covid. "Being uncomfortable is a good feeling, and it leads you to greater things," Filoni encouraged, urging the team to create something superior to their previous works. This resulted in enhanced body mechanics, facial animation, and lighting, leading Filoni to remark, "Wow, you guys, you are actually creating cinema."
"Maul: Shadow Lord" represents a significant upgrade from previous projects like "The Bad Batch" and "Tales of the Underworld," according to Portillo. The series is set for release in 2026, promising a cinematic experience.
"Tales of the Underworld" will explore the lives of Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane, each character receiving three episodes. Ventress' storyline will delve into her resurrection by Mother Talzin and her subsequent journey, including a relationship with a young boy that unfolds over the three shorts. Portillo confirmed that this series picks up from the "Dark Disciple" novel, focusing on Ventress' connection with Quinlan Vos and the emotional impact of their relationship. "I think fans want to see that, especially since Jedi are not supposed to get involved, but there's always that love story," she said.
Ventress' narrative will also explore her introspection and the choices she faces after her past experiences. "Sometimes after they've gone through a lot, they start to rethink their path," Portillo noted, highlighting the character's struggle between exile and returning to the dark side.
Both "Tales of the Underworld" and "Maul: Shadow Lord" are poised to enrich the Star Wars saga. "Tales of the Underworld" is slated for release on Disney+ on May 4, 2025, while fans eagerly await further details on "Maul: Shadow Lord."
