Top horror studio Blumhouse is gearing up to celebrate its 15th anniversary in a big way, bringing back the 2022 hit M3GAN to theaters with a twist, just before the sequel's release. This limited theatrical run introduces a controversial new feature that encourages the use of smartphones in the cinema.

As part of the Halfway to Halloween initiative, Shudder will host one-night-only screenings of M3GAN, along with Ma and Annabelle, featuring Meta's innovative "Movie Mate" technology. This technology allows audience members to engage directly with M3GAN through a chatbot and enjoy second-screen capabilities that deliver exclusive content in real-time.

Play"Movie Mate is exclusively available to theater-goers and can be activated by sending a direct message to the Instagram account @M3GAN," Blumhouse explained, as reported by Variety.

"The initiative is designed to enhance the 'second screen' experience, leveraging Meta's technology to build anticipation for the upcoming release of M3GAN 2.0 on June 27."

Blumhouse also teased that fans can look forward to sneak peeks, exclusive recorded messages from the films' directors and talent, and surprise special appearances in select markets. While this approach aims to revitalize the theater-going experience, it raises questions about the impact on traditional screenings. The hope is that this experiment remains limited and does not become a standard for regular showings.

The special M3GAN screening is scheduled for various theaters across the nation on April 30, followed by Annabelle on May 7, and Ma on May 14. M3GAN 2.0 will premiere in U.S. theaters on June 27.
